"Astronomers have discovered that the universe is like nothing anyone could have guessed. For one thing, it is 99.5% invisible -- everything visible makes up only about half of one percent of the cosmic density. But a combination of observations, theory, and supercomputer simulations has allowed us to visualize the evolution and structure of the entire universe, the invisible as well as the visible, from the Big Bang to the present and into the future. The invisible dark matter and dark energy control the evolution and future of the cosmos. In the far future, the visible universe will consist of just the nearby galaxies that are bound together by gravity. We humans could be the source of intelligence in the entire future visible universe -- if we can during the 21st century come to a just, peaceful, sustainable relationship with each other and our home planet."
Joel R. Primack, PH.D.
Professor of Physics at the University of California, Santa Cruz
"Joel R. Primack is one of the world's leading cosmologists and a creator of the foundational theory of Cold Dark Matter, which is the basis of the standard modern theory of the universe. He and his team use some of the world's biggest supercomputers to simulate the evolution of the universe, and they compare the results with observational data. Primack has recently chaired the Forum on Physics and Society of the American Physical Society, as well as the Committee on Science, Ethics, and Religion of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He is a coauthor with Frank von Hippel of Advice and Dissent: Scientists in the Political Arena (1974). With Nancy Ellen Abrams, he is co-author of The View from the Center of the Universe: Discovering Our Extraordinary Place in the Cosmos (Penguin/Riverhead, 2006) and The New Universe and the Human Future: How a Shared Cosmology Could Transform the World (Yale University Press, 2011) http://new-universe.org . Primack and Abrams are married and have a daughter, Samara Bay (samarasworld.com)."
